In the News: The Troy University Lake Lagoona Project

Troy University Lake Lagoona project

Last month the Troy University Lake Lagoona project dug into its final phase as work began on the campus lagoon and surrounding grounds.

About the project

According to reports, the Troy University Lake Lagoona project will be completed in the spring of 2025. The final phase focuses on the lagoon and the area leading up the hill to Janice Hawkins Park and the Trojan Amphitheatre.

Throughout the years, large amounts of silt settled in the lagoon. Thus, the depth and clarity are affected. So, the Troy University Lake Lagoona project includes draining it to dig out the built-up silt. Lake Lagoona will be as deep as it once was in the end.

In addition, the surrounding area will feature improved landscaping and watershed enhancements, like the downstream water flow system being constructed from the Janice Hawkins Cultural Arts Park’s retaining pond to the lagoon.

There will also be more walking trails to explore and lighting improvements to the surrounding grounds.

More about Lake Lagoona

According to the university’s historical timeline, Lake Lagoona was originally constructed by a student crew in 1937. Reports share that in the summer of 1938, Lake Lagoona was where students learned to sail as part of a sailing course offered.

The small campus lake is located across from the chapel and is the drainage point of the creek that runs through the Trojan Oaks Golf Course. It is also the major source of water for irrigating the practice golf course, which underwent a $1.5 million renovation in 2013.
